Watercolor Clown #7 Ryan Combs

2013-03-03 20.50.10

Hello Fellow Clown Lovers,

Clowns – I love them!  I love to paint bright, colorful, happy images and clowns fit right in with that.

I have painted clowns for several years.  Until recently I focused on painting them in Acrylics on canvas, but I have renewed my love of Watercolor and I am currently working on a series of paintings that incorporates great clowns (most of whom I have made friends with on Facebook) and watercolor on small affordable 9 x 12 watercolor paintings. My goal is to create 75 watercolor clowns in the 9 X 12 size.  I hope to sell thru Facebook or directly to the buyer and hopefully sell a few to the proud clown collectors out in  the world.

Each image will be on Canson 140 LB  Watercolor paper 9 X 12.  Each image will be mailed in a document mailer with a certificate of authenticity. Let me know if your interested or if you have a clown image for me to consider for the series.

Why I paint Clowns: For the record I do paint other things besides clowns but I have a passion and a love for clowns.  I paint my clown images with pride.  Many of the clowns I have met in person, or I am friends with on Facebook.  Some I have sought out because I came across a photo I liked. Others have found out about my work through their friends and came to me.  Each image is personally vetted.  I am looking for a certain look or feel from my paintings.  Not every image presented to me is right for a painting.

I am a skilled artist. I paint both in acrylic and watercolor. Neither of these mediums are easy or forgiving (especially watercolor). I have spent 40 years perfecting my skill. The fact that, I as an artist choose to paint some of the sweetest, funniest, most colorful, and always happy portraits you will ever find anywhere, is a matter of personal choice.

I realize that not everyone will get it or be on board with what I do. I realize there is a select market for my work. I am ok with this. I have faith that the clown and circus industry will surround me with love and laughter and purchase my paintings and prints. This is a very select market to sell to – I get it. You either love clowns or you don’t. I have been working for years to earn the trust of my clown friends and I will do my best to depict their clown persona, so that those who have had the pleasure of interacting with that clown in the past can remember and cherish those memories every time they look at one of my prints or paintings.

I am striving to be the best artist who paints clowns, I am following on the heels of Jim Howle (whom I have met and truly love) and Red Skelton (whom I wish I had met) I am not comparing my skill to theirs, but those are who I relate to.  … It is an honor to truly depict the magic of a clown, to catch the sparkle in the eye that has delighted thousands of children. If you’re good to the clown world they will be good to you.  Sincerely Patty Sue O’Hair – Vicknair.

Clown Paintings by Patty Sue O’Hair-Vicknair or PSOVART

Hello my name is Patty Sue O’Hair- Vicknair I am the author of this blog and a clown lover and painter.  My married name is Vicknair but I keep my maiden name in artist name as a tribute to my late Father who was my biggest critic and my biggest fan.  With his ever-loving artistic photographers instruction I learned to recognize a great pose or as he would say that “twinkle in the eye”.   I hope that I have captured in some of these paintings the “twinkle in the eye” that draws you in to each portrait and makes you smile.   These paintings are my Clowns.  The first series is called “The Human Side of a Clown”.  I tried to show a little glimpse into the personality or the emotion of the clown  in each image that made you stop and take a second look and maybe feel the joy that comes from the painting.  I love clowns and I am always looking for a great clown image to paint.  More Clowns coming Soon…

All of these paintings are for sale and prints are available if you’re interested let me know…

What do Clowns have to offer us?

Rainbow Clown

Rainbow Clown

If you have a love of clowns like myself, but your not in the clown world.  You may not realize what is involved in being a clown.

There is much more going on then the average joe realizes.   Just like it is with anything the deeper you plunge into a particular world the more you find out about it.   I will post a few blogs about clowns and their world next so you can become a little more filmier with them.

I am not a clown but I have a deep seated appreciation to anyone that can bring a laugh to a human being whether they are a child or an adult.  My love started when I was a kid, I was always supposed to be in bed and asleep by 10:00 but that did not sit well with my love of comedy.  After all Johnny Carson didn’t come on till 10:30, so I always tip toed down the hall and hung out behind the couch, so I too could watch the show.  Johnny sometimes had Clowns or Carnival acts on and lots of Comedians.  Unfortunately I sometimes got so involved in the act that I would let out a giggle, which gave me away to my parents and got me sent to bed again…. But I will never forget the images and the laughter they invoked.

Over the years I have often thought I would loved to have been around during the Vaudeville times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaudeville), but fortunately for me they were playing Carol Burnett reruns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Burnett_Show)  during my youth.  I never missed a show this was as close as I could get to Vaudeville.

But alas life is not without hope and Clowns are a great link to the Vaudeville times… They take a gag, site gag or just some stupid great joke and present to you either as a one on one presentation or to a crowd.  They take the chance you will not laugh, but chances are the combination of the wild clothes and hair combined with the over exaggerated  expressions, you will find your self laughing.

Laughter…is the gift that all clowns give to us the normal people in there lives.  This is a wonderful gift and should not be underestimated.

Check out this post on the importance of laughter

http://thejobofwork.blogspot.com/2011/03/on-laughter.html

I want to thank each Clown I have had the great fortune to come in contact with for the great job you do of bringing laughter to peoples lives.

Please post any stories you may have of how a great clown enriched your life and brought you some laughter.  I look forward to reading them.

Now go watch a clown and have some fun!

Thanks
